Dr. Casedy Ann Thomas is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences at Virginia Tech. Thomas’s research focuses on linking research and practice for culturally relevant pedagogy and culturally responsive teaching in mathematics education preK-12, the development of ambitious mathematics instruction with teacher candidates, and examining professional development that supports in-service teachers to implement responsive teaching practices. Additionally, she is a Research Associate for the Teachers in the Movement Project, working on oral histories of segregated Black education in Virginia during the Civil Rights Movement. Recent publications have been featured in the Journal of Mathematics Teacher Education, the Journal of Mathematics Education at Teachers College, and ZDM-Mathematics Education.
Prior to her position at Virginia Tech, she worked as a Research Scientist for the University of Virginia in the School of Education and Human Development in the Center for Advanced Study of Teaching and Learning and as an elementary and secondary mathematics teacher educator within the department of Curriculum, Instruction and Special Education. Thomas also served as an Assistant Professor at the University of Alabama upon completing her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia
