The end of each semester offers an opportunity for Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) to implement feature updates on campus-wide tools.

Kaltura

  • Captioning video content is an essential part of creating high-quality educational resources that improve student outcomes and user engagement. Beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Dec. 21, 2020, all videos transferred from Zoom to Kaltura will receive automated machine captions generated with speech-recognition software. This feature eliminates the need to manually request captions. Machine-generated captions are not 100 percent accurate, so video owners are encouraged to review the machine captions for corrections prior to sharing videos.

Canvas

  • On Dec. 19, 2020, the Student View feature in courses will move from a button on the right sidebar of the Home screen to an eyeglass icon at the top right of the desktop view on every page.

  • The previously announced move to the New Rich Content Editor (RCE) will occur on Dec. 19, 2020. The RCE update provides a condensed, intuitive toolbar for the Canvas text editor that is grouped by common icons and interactions.

Zoom

  • Beginning on Dec. 19, 2020, Zoom recordings will revert to a 30-day retention period within the Zoom interface. Those recordings will continue to be available long-term in My Media in Canvas or at video.vt.edu. Please make sure any URLs pointing to Zoom recordings are updated.
