Elementary Education Program
Dynamic, Robust Program
The Elementary Education Program prepares elementary educators for 21st century classrooms and leads to initial licensure in Virginia.
Powerful teaching results from the interplay of knowledge, curiosity, and reflection about: (a) children and child development, (b) teaching and learning processes in general academic and specific content areas, and (c) the socio-cultural contexts of schooling. Our program is designed to support the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be innovative, effective, and equity-focused educators.
We provide students with a variety of field experiences and other simulations that allow them to develop and practice their teaching skills with a focus on research-based practices that advance student learning and equity.
Reimagining the future begins with practices that put educational excellence, innovation, and equity at the fore. At the Virginia Tech School of Education, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to transform teaching and learning, conduct groundbreaking research, and engage with learning communities around the globe. Teacher candidates from historically underrepresented populations are especially encouraged to join and contribute to our learning community.
As a global catalyst for individual transformation, we’re pushing the boundaries of knowledge and practice to reimagine a more equitable and just world.
PROGRAM MISSION
- To prepare innovative, effective, reflective, and equity-focused elementary educators.
- To diversify the teaching force within and beyond the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- To provide elementary educators with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions to advance inquiry and practice in our public schools and beyond.
