Mathematics Education

The mathematics education research group is interdisciplinary by nature of its subject. We collaborate with faculty members across the university, from departments in engineering, to physics, psychology, sociology and more. Our collective research spans K-16 mathematics teaching and learning.

Interdisciplinary Excellence

The Mathematics Education Program at Virginia Tech unites faculty and students from the College of Sciences' Mathematics Department and the School of Education. Students develop understanding of how individuals learn mathematics, which informs curriculum design, teaching practice, and assessment instruments.

We seek to establish equitable learning environments that take advantage of current research and technology. We believe that all teacher educators must be prepared to provide equity and access for all learners at all educational levels, kindergarten through doctoral studies.


Specific faculty research interests include the following:

  • K-12 students' learning of fractions and algebra
  • The learning and teaching of college mathematics courses, especially linear algebra
  • Quantitative literacy
  • Students' mathematical conjecturing
  • Teaching of probability and statistics
  • Professional development of K-16 teachers
  • Supporting students' learning through appropriate use of technology
