Reading Specialist (K-12)
The Reading Specialist Program is a state-approved Masters of Education degree leading to the Reading Specialist endorsement in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Students receive either a Master's (M.A.Ed.) or an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree along with the reading specialist endorsement. The program prepares teachers for reading specialist positions at elementary, middle, or high school levels.
The program is offered in a hybrid format with courses delivered virtually during the Fall and Spring semesters and on the Blacksburg campus for an intensive 2-week summer session. Students must be available to travel to the Virginia Tech campus during the summer session. There are no exceptions.
The program generally takes 2.5 years to complete.
The Reading Specialist Program has four broad foci:
- Research-Based Instructional Practices
- Developmentally-grounded Instruction
- Diagnostic Assessment
- Resourceful Literacy Leadership
