CPR, Emergency First Aid, and Use of AED Certification Requirements for Teachers

CPR/First Aid/AED License Requirement

As Required by the Virginia Department of Education:

§ 4. Every person seeking initial licensure or renewal of a license shall provide evidence of completion of certification or training in emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators. The certification or training program shall be based on the current national evidence-based emergency cardiovascular care guidelines for cardiopulmonary resuscitation and the use of an automated external defibrillator, such as a program developed by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross.

The following must be included on official documentation submitted to the licensure office by an individual:

Individual’s full name (matching the name on licensure forms and the individual’s license, if applicable).

Title or description of training or certification completed that clearly indicates that all three components were included: 

  1. emergency first aid,
  2. CPR including hands-on practice, and
  3.  use of AEDs.

The Virginia Department of Education Does Not Accept a full On-Line CPR/AED/First Aid training certification, it must include #2—Hands on practice. 

NOTE: Students may enroll in CPR/First Aid/AED offerings provided by the Virginia Tech Recreation Sports to meet this licensure requirement and all classes are held in 198 McComas Hall. Please refer to their website for class offering information. Note: classes are offered during the academic year semesters by VT Recreation.

Please note:  There will be an online component of the course that you will need to complete and will receive information on after registering for a course. 

To register, participants must follow these steps:

  1. Go to https://recsports.vt.edu/
  2. Click on the word "Menu" in the top right corner of the page
  3. Click on the "plus sign" to expand the Wellness options
  4. Select Health & Safety Certifications
  5. Follow the instructions to register for CPR/First Aid/Lay Responder (Adult, Child, Infant)

Please note:  If you are unable to attend an offering on-campus, it is the student’s responsibility to complete a CPR/First Aid/AED- Adult/Child course offering and provide a copy of the certificate of completion to the SOE before entering student teaching
