Securing Zoom Meetings while Including Invited Guests
April 8, 2021
Zoom meeting hosts can now allow specified guests to join meetings from outside the vt.edu domain, even when the ‘need to be signed into Virginia Tech’ setting is being used. Selecting the ‘require authentication to join’ setting along with the ‘authentication exception’ allows captioners, guest presenters, and others to join a meeting while maintaining a high level of security. Zoom will generate unique meeting invitations for guests that allow them to bypass Virginia Tech authentication.
While the incidence of Zoom bombing has greatly decreased since early 2020, some instances of meeting interruptions continue to be reported. Technology-enhanced Learning and Online Strategies (TLOS) urges hosts to safeguard meetings using the strongest security settings available.
TLOS, a unit of the Division of Information Technology, is the service provider for Zoom at Virginia Tech. For assistance with upgrading software, contact 4Help.vt.edu.
