LaDale Winling, an associate professor in the Department of History, and Robert Nelson, University of Richmond, received a Digital Extension Grant from the American Council of Learned Societies for their project titled  “Mapping Inequality:  Redlining in New Deal America.”

The project, online since 2016, serves as a repository of historic maps of 225 U.S. cities where redlining, the practice of discriminating against a community by refusing to offer credit or insurance on the basis of race or ethnicity, occurred between 1935 and 1940.

With this grant, Winling, Nelson, and their team will develop an expanded third version of the project, which will include additional maps, new visualization tools, contextual essays, and curricular materials.
