Command Sergeant Major (RET) Sherwood C. Gatts II is a native of Moundsville, West Virginia. He entered active service in February 1988 and attended One Station Unit Training at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

CSM (RET) Gatts held numerous duty positions to include Bradley Gunner, Squad Leader, Tank Commander, Section leader, Jump Master, Drill sergeant, Platoon Sergeant, Small Group Leader, Senior Doctrinal Developer and Writer, First Sergeant, Operations Sergeant Major, Chief Military Science Instructor, Senior Armor OC/T and Command Sergeant Major

His military education includes M113 Armored Personnel carrier Course, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Course, M551 Sheridan Tank Commanders Course, Basic Airborne School, Jumpmaster School, Air Assault School, Drill Sergeant School, Stryker Net course, NBC School, Basic Instructor Course, Primary Leadership Development Course, Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course (DL), Advanced Noncommissioned Officers Course, United States Army First Sergeant Course, Battalion Pre-Command Course and the United Stated Army Sergeants Major Academy (Non-Resident Class 35). Foreign Schools include Canadian Airborne School and French Commando School.

CSM (RET) Gatts awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (2 OLC), Meritorious Service Medal (7 OLC), Army Commendation Medal (3 OLC), Army Achievement Medal (7 OLC), Good Conduct Medal (10th Award), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Valorous Unit Award, Meritorious Unit Citation, Combat Action Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, Drill Sergeant Identification Badge and Air Assault Badge. He is the recipient of both the Bronze and Silver Order of Saint George. His foreign awards include the Canadian Parachutist Badge and the French Commando Badge. He is also a lifetime member of the 82nd Airborne Division Association.

Sherwood has been employed as a Military Science Instructor by Management Analysis Technologies, Inc. supporting the 1st Brigade Army ROTC Cadet Command Mission at Virginia Tech and Radford State Universities since July 16th, 2019.

Sherwood is married to the former Maria “Grace” Necio of Baybay, Leyte Philippines. Sherwood has one daughter, Kayla.
