Navdeep Sokhey is an assistant professor of Arabic in the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures. Her current research focuses on the expressions of communal identities within Bahraini dialects, as well as the construction of gendered identities through speech in Egyptian Arabic. Beyond sociophonetics, Navdeep’s research interests include linguistic anthropology, the sociolinguistics of performance, youth culture & slang, language in social media, and teaching Arabic as a foreign language. She enjoys integrating cultural points from her research into the Arabic courses she currently teaches at Virginia Tech.
