Program Overview

The French and Francophone Studies program provides a comprehensive overview to the literatures, cultures, and languages of the French and Francophone world. The program exposes students to research methods, critical analysis, and advanced pedagogical tools. The principal goal of the program is to prepare students for career tracks that require advanced linguistic and cultural knowledge.

What You'll Study

You will complete 30 credit hours including core requirements, electives, and/or research.

French and Francophone Studies classes cover France, French-speaking Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, and other French immigrant cultures of the Americas. Classes in literature cover the major literary movements, while classes in linguistics provide an overview of the principal areas of inquiry. Our offerings in culture cover a wide-ranging array of interdisciplinary topics. The degree includes two options to complete the required 30 semester credit hours. You may complete 30 hours of coursework and take a comprehensive master’s examination based on a reading list, or complete 24 hours of coursework plus 6 research credits and write a master’s thesis. Full-time students normally complete the program in two years. Students may complete the degree entirely online, in residence, or both. Virginia Tech is a fully accredited, world-ranked research university.

The Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures has a limited number of graduate assistantships and fellowships available for students applying for full time study on the Blacksburg Campus. Entering students can apply for such funding as part of their admissions application. No separate application required.
