Our goal is to help provisionally licensed CTE teachers who are hired in a school system based on their professional experience or education become better educators and to provide opportunities to invigorate their joy for teaching, and to enhance their knowledge in their given fields and promote professional enrichment. Courses meet the typical requirements that the Virginia Department of Education requires of teachers hired without an education degree and student teaching experience.

Graduates of our Online Program for Provisionally Licensed CTE Educators provide instruction, support, management, and leadership to facilitate success for all of their secondary students. Our goal is to help you become a better educator and to provide opportunities for you to focus and enhance your teaching. CTE teaching positions are unique in any given school – teachers have the opportunity to both work with students and with business leaders in the local community.

WHAT YOU'LL STUDY

Students in the Jumpstart Pathway will complete 33 hours of graduate-level coursework, concentration, and elective courses. The courses typically requested by provisionally certified teachers include:

  • EDCT 5634: Curriculum and Instructional Processes in CTE
  • EDCT 5684: Advanced Curriculum & Program Management
  • EDCT 5784: GS: Student Assessment for Workforce Development
  • EDCI 5264: Comprehending Processes and Reading in the Content Areas
  • EDCI 5524: Behavior Management in K-12 Classrooms
  • EDEP 5154: Psychological Foundations of Education

Course Descriptions

Focus on the history and development of career and technical education with emphasis on the philosophical bases of the field. The conduct and purposes of career and technical education under different philosophical orientations are compared. An overview of the organization and administration, the relationship of career and technical education to agencies both in and outside of education, and how economic conditions have impacted career and technical education are explored. Definition and development of a personal philosophy is required.
