To be considered for the master's program, applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with minimum of 3.0 GPA.
Qualified Virginia Tech undergraduates may begin earning graduate credit while completing the undergraduate major in Spanish. Students must apply and be accepted into the BA-MA program before the beginning of the semester in which graduate courses are taken. Graduate credit will not be granted retroactively.
Students enrolled in the accelerated BA-MA may double count up to 12 credits. Only 5000-level courses taken in last 12 months of BA may count toward both degrees. All requirements must be met for both the undergraduate major and the graduate degree, including the MA thesis or reading list exam.
Criteria for admission are as follows:
- Current enrollment as a Spanish major at Virginia Tech
- 3.3 undergraduate GPA
- At least 6 hours of course credit in French at the 4000 level

Include a scanned copy of your transcripts with your online application, then arrange for an official copy to be sent to graduate admissions after you receive an offer of admission.
Department Graduate Testing Requirements
GRE is not required for Hispanic Studies (M.A. in Foreign Languages, Cultures, and Literatures).
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required for Hispanic Studies (M.A. in Foreign Languages, Cultures, and Literatures). You can include references/recommendations email addresses in your online application, or have them send paper copies directly to Graduate School.
Provide one writing sample (7-10 pages) in Spanish that illustrates your potential for research. This could be a solo-written class paper or term project, published work, or work product that demonstrates your analytical and writing abilities.
Letter of Interest and Curriculum Vitae
A letter of interest (250-500 words) is required by the Department of Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures along with your latest Curriculum Vitae.
Please address the following questions in the letter of interest:
- Why do you want to undertake graduate work in Foreign Languages, Cultures, and Literatures at Virginia Tech?
- Why do you qualify to pursue a graduate degree at Virginia Tech?
- If you have a concentration or area of interest in mind, briefly outline your interests in this area.
- What graduate faculty members are you interested in studying with and why?
- A list of graduate faculty is available in the "Faculty" area of our department's website
- What do you expect to contribute as a student and subsequently as a member of the profession?
Applying as an International Student
International students might be required to submit TOEFL scores, immigration documents, and other additional materials with their application.
We require a minimum TOEFL score of 100 (IBT) or IELTS score of 6.5 for admission. Test scores should be sent to us using ETS institution code 5859.

Applicants are welcome to submit any additional information with application material that would be useful in evaluation of your application.
Applying for Graduate Assistantships and Fellowships
We offer a limited number of fully funded graduate teaching assistantships for full time, residential enrollment in the program. A question on the application for graduate admission asks whether you want to be considered for a teaching assistantship.
Degree-seeking students must include a $75 fee with their application, though check to see if you qualify for a waiver or reduced fee.

We begin review of applications in January. Completing the application by January 15th will give you the best opportunity to be considered for teaching assistantships. Admissions and assistantships are usually announced in February.
Virginia Tech qualified Accelerated B.A.-M.A. must Submit application by July 1 for Fall and December 1 for Spring.
