Program Overview
Teaching Agriculture, a Teaching Job Like No Other
As you know, agriculture is a very dynamic field, one that provides exciting and fast-paced experiences! Hence, teaching agriculture in a high school is the same. It is like no other teaching job one has ever seen and offers opportunities for:
- Working with high school students
- Working with business partners in the business community
- Taking students to state and national conferences
- Teaching variety of agricultural production technology, horticulture, floral design, and animal care, to name just a few

By far, it is the best teaching position in any given school. It involves the best of both worlds – working with students and working with business leaders in the local community!
Why choose this program?
- There is a critical shortage of agricultural teachers in Virginia.
- Average starting salary is $45,000.00 and depending on where you live it can go as high as $55,000.00 plus. And, this is for a 10-month contract (you have off in the summers and school holidays).
- You can earn a Virginia teaching license with an endorsement in marketing and a VT master’s degree in one year.
- The program can be custom-designed into a hybrid distance program, meaning you only have to spend three weeks in the summer and a fall semester in Blacksburg. If you would like, the remainder of the program can be completed off campus.
- The VT CTE program has achieved a 100% placement rate for its’ graduates for the past 10 years!
- Career promotion opportunities include being a school administrator or a university professor. Early Field Experience in Career and Technical Education
