Liam Weikart attended undergraduate college at Winthrop University in SC (BA Sociology); got his Sociology PhD from CUNY Graduate Center in NYC, and lived in NYC for many years, an on-and-off grad student--also making money as a dog walker and DJ.

At CUNY Grad Center he studied mainly with (committee chair) Stanley Aronowitz (RIP), and Patricia Clough. His dissertation committee added Lynn S. Chancer (Hunter College / CUNY GC) and David Grubbs from Brooklyn College. His dissertation was defended in 2021: The DIY Underground Experimental Music Scene in New York City, 2000-2010: Mapping Objects, Networks and Relations.

His areas of inquiry and research include media/cultural studies, sociological theory, pop culture and music/arts, youth subcultures, urban sociology, deviance and crime, and cybernetics.

In Spring of 2026, he was awarded the SOC@VT award for undergraduate teaching excellence. He has a couple essays coming soon for journals/periodicals: an interview with Guillermo Pizarro of Flag Day records (WV), for Deaf City Journal (NC); an essay on No Fun Fest (2004-2009) for Annual 2026 (forthcoming, Korm Plastics; NL); and a book on the band Gastr Del Sol (forthcoming, Korm Plastics; NL).

Weikart is also a DJ and has a weekly show on WUVT. College radio is very important to him.
