Debra Freas holds bachelor's degrees in classics and ancient history from the University of Texas at Austin and a Ph.D. in classics from the University of California, Irvine. Dr. Freas’ research focuses on race, gender, intertextuality, feminist epistemology, and sexual violence in Greek and Latin literature. She has published articles on topics ranging from gender and genre in Ovid’s Metamorphoses to dramatic structure and philosophy in Senecan tragedy to Mesoamerican beliefs in Luis Alfaro’s adaptation of Euripides’ Medea. She has recently completed a student Latin commentary titled Selections from Petronius’ Satyrica: The Tales of Eumolpus (Bloomsbury, 2024). Professor Freas regularly teaches courses in Latin, Greek, ancient history, gender in antiquity, classical reception, and cities of the Roman empire.
