History students understand the events, languages, and cultures of the past, while also forming a clearer picture of the future. You'll develop a strong foundation in liberal arts as you learn how to gather evidence, evaluate it critically, and communicate findings effectively.
At Virginia Tech, we offer a major that's flexible in content, but rigorous in teaching skills of analysis, inquiry, and interpretation. Our talented faculty members specialize in a broad list of topics, and they're always mentoring students with independent research projects of their own. Classes are small and highly engaged, and our close-knit students hold regular social events and volunteer activities in their award-winning history club.
As a history student at Virginia Tech, you'll leave college with more than a prescribed survey of lecture courses. You'll leave with the confidence to think critically and adapt, no matter where you go after graduation (and our students go everywhere).
Beyond the Classroom

We have a strong research faculty filled with award-winning teachers. They have built a reputation among students for being approachable and engaging.
Our students get real job experience with internships at museums, historical societies, and organizations across the country. Your work as a history major will translate to many different job titles, with skills that are valuable in any field. We have dedicated career advising and tips for applying your historical skills to a career that's rewarding and right for you.
We offer scholarships, awards, and research grants just for history students, as well as those sponsored by the university and our College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.
Out-of-class learning experiences are highly encouraged here. Our students undertake independent research, publish their work, and present at conferences.

Experience history first-hand on education abroad trips. We offer summer, semester and year-long opportunities to a variety of locations across the world.
Our active Phi Alpha Theta chapter and our History Club host regular social gatherings, volunteer in the community, coordinate research conferences, and generally just have a great time together studying all things history.
