Virginia Tech offers a Secondary Science Education teacher licensure program in which candidates earn a Master of Arts in Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The Secondary Science Education program is nationally accredited and is approved for licensure in Chemistry (grades 6-12).

Our Chemistry Licensure Program (6-12)
Virginia Tech offers a Secondary Science Education teacher licensure program in which candidates earn a Master of Arts in Education in the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences. The Secondary Science Education program is nationally accredited and is approved for licensure in Chemistry (grades 6-12).The MAED Science Education Licensure Program includes coursework in educational foundations, science teaching pedagogy, special education, instructional technology, content area reading, and history/philosophy of science.

The Virginia Tech Science Education Program is designed to prepare science educators for teaching science through inquiry processes where students apply their knowledge in real world contexts. Teachers also learn how to facilitate the development of learning environments that motivate and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our science education program is dedicated to preparing scientifically and technologically literate students who can make positive contributions in the world.
What You’ll Study
The MAED Science Education Licensure Program includes coursework in educational foundations, science teaching pedagogy, special education, instructional technology, content area reading, history/philosophy of science, and STEM/robotics. The program includes a field experience in schools during the fall semester and a student teaching internship during the spring semester. Students admitted to the program are required to complete all science content requirements and 9-12 hours of education coursework before beginning the field experience in the fall.
The normal course load for the 39-hour MAED program is 12 hours per semester and 6 hours/summer session. Students beginning the program as dual status may take one or more courses during the academic semester. Students must complete a minimum of 6-9 hours of professional education courses and all science content course requirements for licensure prior to the fall field experience. The Praxis II exam must be passed prior to student teaching in the spring.

- EDCI 4024 Humanizing the K-12 Classroom (Elective with Service Learning) (3 hrs)
- Praxis I or SAT/ACT equivalent (entrance requirement)
- PRAXIS II in Content area (pass before student teaching)
- Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (pass before student teaching)

This graduate program leads to licensure in middle and secondary science (biology, grades 6-12). The program includes a field experience in schools during the fall semester and a student teaching internship during the spring semester.
