Jason Higgins, a postdoctoral fellow in the Center for Humanities, received a National Endowment for the Humanities grant on behalf of the center to host a two-week institute for high school teachers. Scheduled to take place June 19–30, 2023, on the Virginia Tech campus, the institute will focus on teaching educators how to incorporate oral histories of veterans into their classes. Co-directing are Jim Dubinsky, an associate professor in the Department of English, and Trevor Stewart, an associate professor in the School of Education, both themselves veterans. Higgins, who is jointly affiliated with the Center for Humanities and University Libraries, has interviewed more than 100 veterans since he began this work, including formerly incarcerated veterans for his doctoral dissertation; he will share his experiences and expertise during the institute.
