Gary Downey, Alumni Distinguished Professor in the Department of Science, Technology, and Society who retired from Virginia Tech in August, received the Amsterdamska Award for best edited book from the European Association for the Study of Science and Technology. The award is in honor of Olga Amsterdamska for a significant creative collaboration in an edited book or special issue in the broad field of science and technology studies. Downey was recognized for Making and Doing: Activating STS through Knowledge Expression and Travel (Cambridge, Massachusetts: MIT Press, 2021), which he edited with Teun Zuiderent-Jerak. The book is available via open access.

Downey’s individual contributions to the book were: “Introduction: Activating STS through STS Sensibilities,” pp. 1–36, with Zuiderent-Jerak, and “Critical Participation: Inflecting Dominant Knowledge Practices through STS,” pp. 219–43.
