Sam Cook, Emily Satterwhite, and Jessica Taylor Participated in Project to Create Map of Pre-Colonial Social Landscapes in Southwest Virginia
December 1, 2021
CLAHS faculty members Sam Cook, an associate professor in the Department of History; Emily Satterwhite, an associate professor in the Department of Religion and Culture; and Jessica Taylor, an assistant professor in the Department of History, were part of a Virginia Tech team that created a map that reconstructs the social landscapes of Southwest Virginia prior to the arrival of the Europeans. The Department of Religion and Culture provided funds to expand the initial map, which focused on the region around the Virginia Tech campus. The map offers a view on what life was like in this region four centuries ago, as well as the critical ways that trade influenced interactions between various language groups.
