Clinical Mental Health Counseling Admissions Information
MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
- Applicants must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with 3.0-grade point average (GPA) for the last 60 hours of undergraduate course work for regular admission status or 2.5 GPA to 2.99 GPA for provisional admission status.
- Have career goals consistent with the degree offered by Counselor Education.
- Demonstrate commitment to time requirements of the Counselor Education program.
- Demonstrate strong oral and written communication skills.
GRE Scores are optional for application to this program.

Transcripts
Include a web printout or scanned copy of your unofficial transcripts with your online application. If you receive an offer of admission and choose to enroll at VT, then arrange for an official copy to be sent to both Graduate Admissions and School of Education.
Graduate School Testing Requirements
The GRE is optional for Counselor Education (M.A.Ed.). If you choose to submit GRE scores as part of your application, please have the testing agency send your official scores to Virginia Tech Graduate School, code 5859. There is not a minimum score requirement for admission to the Counselor Education program.
Letters of Recommendation
Three letters of recommendation are required for Counselor Education (M.A.Ed.). You can include references/recommendations email addresses in your online application, and they will receive an email with instructions on how to provide electronic references.

Please submit your latest Curriculum Vitae/Resume.
Short Answer Guidelines: When completing the online application, you will be asked to submit short answer responses to the following prompts. The faculty expects your responses to be composed entirely by you, without editing or review by others. Please limit your responses to no more than 250 words per question.
- What is your interest in graduate work, especially “counseling"/“counselor education, supervision, and research"? (For mental health and school programs it should relate to “counseling”, for Phd it should ask about goals for “counselor education, supervision, and research”)
- Why is Virginia Tech a good fit for your goals?
- What contributions you plan to make as a student/member of the profession?
- Describe your personal strengths in working with people and organizations.
- Describe your limitations or challenges in working with people and organizations.
- Please give evidence of your commitment to complete a master's program. (This may include how you have planned for personal, financial, family, and work commitments).
- Please describe ANY criminal or civil legal action which has been taken against you in the past (or is still pending), and the resolution of that action (exclude traffic violations).
Applying as an International Student
Because this program is only offered on our Roanoke campus, we do not accept applications from international students for this master's program with a visa other than an F1 or J1.

Application Fees
Degree-seeking students must include a $75 fee with their application. If this poses a financial hardship, check with the Graduate School to see if you qualify for a waiver or reduced fee.

There is a discount for in-state K-12 teachers; use this application form in order to receive the reduced costs. Otherwise, as with on-campus students, we refer you to the VT Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for information on financial assistance. Generally, distance learners may qualify for federal loans if they take 5 or more credit hours per semester.

The Graduate School sends an official offer of admission to applicants upon the recommendation of the department faculty. Admitted applicants who are offered graduate assistantships at Virginia Tech are not required to make a decision to commit to the assistantship offer until April 15.
