James Hawdon, a professor in the Department of Sociology and director of the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention, was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Turku in Finland. Hawdon was recognized for his research on community-level consequences of mass violence in cases in Finland and the United States as well as comparative research of the individual-level effects of the COVID-19 pandemic in Finland and the United States. The degree was conferred at the university’s Ceremonial Conferment of Doctoral Degrees, which took place May 27 in Turku.
