Admissions Requirements

General Requirement

  • Bachelor's degree with 3.00 GPA for regular admission status or 2.75 GPA for provisional status is required (last 60 hours of coursework). Undergraduate majors in mathematics, mathematics education, or mathematics-related fields. For students who have not completed a basic core of undergraduate mathematics courses, a limited amount of undergraduate coursework may be completed during the graduate program.
  • Two letters of reference.
  • Undergraduate Mathematics content coursework for licensure.
  • Passing score on Praxis I or acceptable SAT or ACT scores (must be obtained prior to acceptance into program, required by Virginia regulations)
  • Passing score on Praxis II (must be obtained prior to student teaching, required for Virginia
  • licensure)
  • Passing score on VCLA (must be obtained prior to student teaching, required for Virginia licensure)

Dual Enrollment Status

Virginia Tech students may be considered for dual-enrollment status admission during the final semester of undergraduate coursework. Prospective students must have a 3.00 grade point average (GPA) for regular admission to this program. Students admitted under dual status may not receive both graduate and undergraduate credit for the same course (except under the Accelerated UG/G program).

Official Transcripts

Include a scanned copy of your transcripts with your online application, then arrange for an official copy to be sent to both Graduate Admissions and School of Education after you receive an offer of admission.

Department Graduate Testing Requirements

GRE is not required for Mathematics Education Licensure Program (6-12) with master’s degree in Mathematics Education (M.A.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction).

Licensure Testing Requirements

  • Passing scores on the Praxis Core (general skills) test or approved substitute assessment prior to admission.
  • Students must pass Praxis II test in their specific science content area(s) and the Virginia Communication and Literacy (VCLA) prior to student teaching. The correct test is Praxis II.

Mathematics Education Undergraduate Content Check Sheet

This content check sheet should be submitted by potential students with the other application materials. It is used for analysis of coursework and can be use by potential applicants to check on the completion of all requirements.

Letters of Recommendation

Two letters of recommendation are required for Mathematics Education Licensure Program (6-12) with master’s degree in Mathematics Education (M.A.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction).

Letter of Interest

Write a 2-3 page essay in which you discuss why you want to be a mathematics teacher. Consider any experiences you have had working with young people and characteristics that you possess which would make you a good teacher.

Applying as an International Student

International students might be required to submit TOEFL scores, immigration documents, and other additional materials with their application.

We require a minimum TOEFL score of 90 (IBT) or IELTS score of 6.5 for admission. Test scores should be sent to us using ETS institution code 5859.

How much is tuition?

Tuition varies based on in-state or out-of-state status and whether or not you are a teacher. Virtual Campus students do not have to pay activity fees, only a technology fee. Graduate tuitions and fees are listed at http://www.bursar.vt.edu. Our campus is considered Virtual.

Application Fees

Degree-seeking students must include a $75 fee with their application, though check to see if you qualify for a waiver or reduced fee.

 

To apply to the graduate program, students must submit the Virginia Tech Graduate School online application.

Other Applicants
This program is offered to State of Virginia Licensure applicants only. Other applicants including international students should apply for Mathematics Education (M.A.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction).

To apply to the Virginia Tech Mathematics Education Licensure Program, select "Education, Curriculum and Instruction " as your major. You will be able to select "Mathematics Education" later in the online form. Choose degree option “M.A.Ed.” from the list and then select “Blacksburg” for campus.

Official GRE scores are required as part of your application. Please have the testing agency send official scores to the Virginia Tech Graduate School, using code 5859.

There is a discount for in-state K-12 teachers; use this application form in order to receive the reduced costs. Otherwise, as with on-campus students, we refer you to the VT Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for information on financial assistance. Generally, distance learners may qualify for federal loans if they take 5 or more credit hours per semester.
