The lovable Virginia Tech mascot recently had a capital idea: Why not hightail it up to Washington, D.C., home to so many Hokies?

Earlier this month Virginia Tech began blanketing one of the nation’s busiest corridors in maroon and orange. Overnight, dozens of ads for the university appeared in Union Station — at street entrances and on pillars, floors, and even interactive digital displays. And there to help tell the university’s story was HokieBird, who had winged its way north for the launch of the four-week campaign.

The campaign is just the start of an ongoing effort to increase awareness of Virginia Tech’s excellence throughout the Washington, D.C. area. For nearly fifty years, the university has maintained research and education programs in the region, including College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences initiatives that range from Hokies on the Hill to graduate programs in marriage and family therapyeducation, and science and technology studies.

“We’re ready to share who we are and what we do,” HokieBird intimated.* “Hokies are in spaces big and small, communities near and far, looking for solutions to complex problems and finding ways to make a difference. Our connections to one another are strong and last a lifetime. We want the rest of the world to know why Hokies are so special.”
