The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands in recognition of exemplary service to the university. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive a copy of the resolution and a certificate of appreciation.
A member of the Virginia Tech community since 1976, Goss has made significant contributions to the understanding of housing research, with particular insights into housing choice, multifamily housing, property management, affordability, and lifestyle segmentation.
Goss served as an associate editor of Housing and Society, an editorial board member of Cityscape, and a reviewer for several other academic publications. She served as president and in other leadership positions of the Housing Education and Research Association, held offices in many other professional organizations, and was active in the National Apartment Association and the Institute for Real Estate Management.
She received the Apartment Career and Education Industry Practitioner Award from the National Apartment Association and the Louise L. and Y.T. Lum Award from the Institute for Real Estate Management.
In 1986, Goss began the nationally recognized property management program at Virginia Tech. The program included the establishment of the Property Management Advisory Board, which supports students with career and scholarship opportunities.
In the classroom, Goss taught both undergraduate and graduate courses related to housing, property management, and Appalachian communities. She advised numerous master’s degree and doctoral candidates and more than 500 undergraduates, and she helped them develop successful careers.
Her commitment to Virginia Tech students was recognized with the university’s Alumni Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising in 2014 and a Certificate of Merit for Outstanding Advising from the National Academic Advising Association, also in 2014.
