Penny Burge, professor of educational research and evaluation in the School of Education in the Virginia Tech College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, has been conferred the title of professor emerita by the Virginia Tech Board of Visitors.

The emeritus title may be conferred on retired professors, associate professors, and administrative officers who are specially recommended to the board by Virginia Tech President Tim Sands. Nominated individuals who are approved by the board receive an emeritus certificate from the university.

A member of the university community since 1980, Burge has contributed to scholarship in programmatic and instructional assessment and evaluation through her work with the U.S. Armed Services, the National Aeronautics and Space Agency, many national and international educational institutions, as well as community colleges and public schools of the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Burge served as the editor of the Journal of Career and Technical Education and was a longstanding member of the editorial board of the Family and Consumer Science Research Journal. In addition, she authored or coauthored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, and reviews.

She directed as chair or co-chair 36 doctoral students, and served on more than 60 master’s degree and doctoral degree committees within the educational research and evaluation, career and technical education, educational psychology, educational leadership, and counselor education programs. She guided her students to successful careers in both academic and corporate settings.

Burge received her bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
