The Minority and Women’s Section Awards Committee of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences has named Anthony Peguero, an associate professor in the Department of Sociology, the 2018 recipient of the Becky Tatum Excellence Award in recognition of his “substantial contributions to criminal justice education and scholarship concerning ethnicity, race, and gender in criminology and criminal justice.”

The award will be presented to Peguero on February 17 in New Orleans at the annual meeting of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences.

Peguero is director of the Laboratory for the Study of Youth Inequality and Justice at Virginia Tech and a research affiliate of the Center for Peace Studies and Violence Prevention. His research interests involve youth violence, socialization and marginalization, schools, and the adaptation of the children immigrants.

He serves as a consultant on the Cartoon Network’s campaign against bullying. He also is co-editor of Sociology Compass, Crime and Deviance Section, and he serves on the editorial board of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice, Sociology of Race and Ethnicity, and the Journal of Criminal Justice. 

Peguero, a National Institute Justice W.E.B. Du Bois Fellow, was named a Virginia Tech Institute for Society, Culture and Environment Fellow in 2015. He received the Tory J. Caeti Outstanding Young Scholar Award from the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences in 2014 and a Coramae Richey Mann Award from the American Society of Criminology in 2013.

Peguero is a member of the Racial Democracy, Crime, and Justice Network, which holds the dual goals of advancing research on the intersection of race, crime, and justice and of promoting racial democracy within the study of these issues by supporting junior scholars from underrepresented groups.
