November 5, 2020
Kathy Tickle, an enrollment services specialist in the School of Education, received the Staff Employee of the Year Award for 2020. Tickle’s career at Virginia Tech spans more than 30 years; since 2007, she has worked with more than 200 students and 20 faculty members in four degree programs.
What is your hometown?
Pocahontas, Virginia.
What is your alma mater?
I graduated from Bluefield College in 1988 with a bachelor of science in business administration. I also received a secretarial science certificate.
What brought you to Virginia Tech?
After college, I married my college sweetheart and moved to Blacksburg. My mother-in-law was working at Virginia Tech and was instrumental in helping me find a part-time job in the administration and supervision of the Special Education Program with Dr. Phil Jones, which later led to a full-time position and put me on my 31-year journey at Virginia Tech. It has been such a blessing.
What are your favorite School of Education memories?
My favorite memories involve the students I’ve helped over the years. I certainly have made lasting friendships with students, faculty, and staff.
What is your favorite activity to do outside of work?
I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, attending church, and traveling. I love being a Mimi to my precious grandchildren, Emmalyn and Preston.
What does the Staff Employee of the Year Award mean to you?
I’m very appreciative of this award as it’s nice to be recognized for something you love to do.
Who would you like to thank?
I would like to thank the late Dr. Phil Jones for giving me the opportunity to begin my career at Virginia Tech, and Dr. Nancy Bodenhorn for nominating me for this award; her support and understanding are always appreciated. I would also like to thank everyone in the college and the Staff Association who played a role in the selection of this award. I truly appreciate it and cannot think of a better place to work.
