Admissions Requirements

To apply to the graduate program, students must submit the Virginia Tech Graduate School online application.

Submission Deadline

Students enter the program either through dual or accelerated status in the spring semester of their senior year, or in the summer. Deadline for applications is December 1.

Admissions Requirements

To be eligible for regular admission status, applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA (last 60 hours of coursework) and a B.A. Transcript reviews of applicants with Music degrees from other colleges should provide evidence that the programs meet specific content requirements; otherwise, candidates will need to take additional coursework as part of the licensure program.

Register for and pass all required tests (Praxis Core, Praxis II, VCLA).  Passing scores on all tests are required for full admission into the program and student teaching. All scores (or other state-approved scores) should accompany the graduate school application, due December 1st, Fall of senior year. Students can pass out of the Praxis core exam with a state-approved SAT or ACT scores. See advisor or Dawn Knight to have your scores checked.

Current VT undergraduate students must pass Praxis II - Music: Content Knowledge (test code 5113) by the senior year and passing scores must be with their application to the Graduate program.  Students may be provisionally accepted into the MAED program if they do not have scores when they apply but will not be permitted to continue into the Master's year unless their passing Praxis II scores have been received. This allows appropriate and necessary time for placements to be requested and secured for the field teaching in the Fall.

Financial Matters

Graduate Assistantships on Blacksburg Campus Only

A question on the application for graduate admission asks whether you want to be considered for a teaching assistantship. Check yes. Please note that Indicating that you wish to be considered for an assistantship does not mean that you will be offered one, only that you wish to be considered for one, if available. It is not advisable to carry an assistantship in the spring semester when you are student teaching, so it might be very challenging to find an assistantship for the fall semester only.

What about financial aid?

Please register for Financial Aid through completing the FAFSA, additional information is available through the Financial Aid office.

Please check the SOE and CLAHS websites for scholarships.

Application Fees

Degree-seeking students must include a $75 fee with their application, though check to see if you qualify for a waiver or reduced fee.
