Joshua Ewudzie
Email: ejoshua24@vt.edu
Hometown: Assin Aworabo, Ghana
Anticipated Graduation: Spring 2026
Undergraduate Institution: University of Education, Winneba
Research Interests: African history, colonial governance, urbanization, and environmental history with a focus on water supply infrastructure in colonial Ghana
Geographic Areas of Interest: Africa
About Me: Joshua’s interest in water supply infrastructure in Colonial Ghana emerged during his undergraduate research on chieftaincy disputes in Assin Worakese and his teaching experience in Asante Akim Agogo where he witnessed the persistent challenges communities faced with access to clean and reliable water. What struck him most was that these challenges were not merely contemporary issues but had deep historical roots. This realization became a turning point, sparking his passion to study colonial history, particularly the politics of water supply in colonial Ghana. His current work examines the politics of water supply and land alienation in Cape Coast between 1874 and 1938, analyzing how water infrastructure projects were deeply entwined with questions of customary law, colonial authority, and local resistance. He engages actively with the historiography of colonial development, health and sanitation, and urban history.
