Ethics Bowl Demonstration

Debate over some of the most pressing issues facing humanity will take center stage as part of the first-ever Virginia Tech Humanities Week.
The Virginia Tech Ethics Bowl team will demonstrate their skills and knowledge on February 9 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Assembly Hall, located in the Holtzman Alumni Center at 901 Prices Fork Road.
Two teams of students will present analyses of prominent moral issues and respond to challenges from each other and from a panel of judges. The goal is not to “win the debate” through rhetorical skill, but to clearly explain and analyze the issues from a range of perspectives.

Led by Justin Horn, a collegiate assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy, Virginia Tech assembled its first Ethics Bowl team last year. The team has excelled in intercollegiate competition and cultivated the skill of reasoned ethical deliberation.
In the Ethics Bowl demonstration, Horn will provide a brief overview of how Ethics Bowl works. The team will then hold a mock match using the Ethics Bowl format: an initial presentation from a first team, a commentary from a second team, a response from the first team, and then a question-and-answer period with the judges.
The audience will have an opportunity for their own question-and-answer period about Ethics Bowl at Virginia Tech.
The Ethics Bowl demonstration is one of several Virginia Tech Humanities Week events set for Feb. 7 through 11. The programs will celebrate 150 years of the humanities at Virginia Tech and the university’s Sesquicentennial Celebration.
