In addition to scholarships offered by the university and the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, we offer graduate program-specific scholarships in education.

VT Scholarship Central

The 2024-2025 General Application for Scholarship Central is now open.
Prospective and returning Hokies should complete the General Application and the FAFSA by January 21, 2024, for maximum financial aid and scholarship consideration for next year.

All Students – You should complete the General Application before attempting to complete any other scholarship application in the Scholarship Central system. The priority deadline to complete the General Scholarship Application is January 21, 2024. If you have not done so already, please remember to complete the FAFSA by visiting: https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa. You must complete both the General Application and the FAFSA for maximum scholarship consideration.

Career and Technical Education scholarships

Description: To assist graduate students focusing in the area of career and technical education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.

Criteria for selection: The scholarship will be given based on demonstrated excellence in research, teaching and service on the part of the active graduate student and consideration will also be given to students based upon financial need.

Description: This scholarship is for a new full-time, on-campus doctoral student in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program.

Criteria for selection: This scholarship is for a new full-time, on-campus doctoral student in the Career and Technical Education (CTE) program. Receiving the scholarship is contingent on being offered and accepting admission into the CTE doctoral program. The scholarship recipient must be a U.S citizen. Selection criteria are academic and professional ability, teaching experience in CTE, and professional and community service activities.

Counselor Education Scholarships

Description: This award is for undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing for a profession in teaching or counseling in grades K-12 and have demonstrated financial need. Recipients of this award shall be recommended by the Director of the School of Education or his designee and selected by the University's Scholarship and Financial Aid Committee.

Criteria for selection: Recipients will be chosen on the basis of financial need, special family circumstances or other extenuating factors which would otherwise prevent the student from attending Virginia Tech. Secondary consideration will be given on the basis of scholastic achievement, good character and/or demonstrated leadership potential.

Description: The Robert and Margaret Hoppock Scholarship, endowed by Dr. and Mrs. Hoppock, is awarded to a student who shows interest in career counseling. Dr. Hoppock was the leading figure in educational and occupational information throughout his career. He and his wife Peg lived in Blacksburg for several summers while he taught classes at Virginia Tech. He was also a consultant for Virginia VIEW, the career information dissemination project housed at Virginia Tech, at its inception more than 20 years ago. Though his career was spent at New York University, he chose to endow his scholarship at Virginia Tech because of his close ties with members of this academic community.

Criteria for selection: Must be a full-time graduate student in Counselor Education in Virginia Tech’s School of Education with a demonstrated interest in Career Development Through the Life Span or guidance. Awardee must demonstrate (1) a commitment to principles of career development, (2) financial need, and (3) satisfactory progress towards a degree in Virginia Tech’s School of Education. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated experience, leadership, and commitment to the principles of Career Development through the lifespan as specified in the bequest.

Description: The scholarship is given to graduate students enrolled in a program to prepare public school administrators.

Criteria for selection: Recipients must be graduate students in Virginia Tech's School of Education who are preparing for careers as public school administrators (school principals or school superintendents). Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic achievement and potential to contribute to effective public school improvement.

Description: The Philip R. and Dorothy H. Jones Memorial Scholarship is provided through the generosity of Dorothy Jones and family in memory of Dr. Philip R. Jones. Dr. Jones was the founder and director of the Special Education Administration Program from 1977 until his death in 1994. Dr. Jones was nationally recognized as a pioneer in policy development and a leader in advocating for children with disabilities and their families. Students are selected to receive the award based on their demonstrated commitment to the education of children and youth with disabilities, successful scholarship, and advocacy for children with disabilities and their families.

Dorothy Jones was the woman who worked alongside Philip Jones and the Special Education Administration Program. She often opened their home to the students for social times, pre- or post sporting events, holidays and other events. She was the ultimate hostess, both at their home and on travels to special education events. She also was the typist (before word processors or computers) for the textbook he used in his classes. Even after her husband’s death in 1994, she remained close to many of his former students. She passed away in 2014 at their home in Blacksburg.

Criteria for selection: Recipients must be graduate students in Virginia Tech’s School of Education who are working toward an education degree with a concentration in special education and preparing for careers in special education administration. Recipients will be chosen on the basis of academic merit, demonstrated leadership qualities on behalf of people with disabilities with first consideration given to applicants with demonstrated commitment, experience and potential as a leader in the field of special education administration.

Description: Annual distribution from the Fund shall be used to provide scholarships assistance for a Montgomery County Public School (MCPS), VA employee who is enrolled in the School of Education on a part time or full time basis. The awardee must be accepted into either a Certificate or Degree program offered in the School of Education.

1. Applicant is a graduate student who is pursuing teacher licensure or a practicing teacher or administrator who wishes to advance their careers or move into academe.

2. Applicant is a student who is a single parent with children under the age of 22 or a student who during their childhood years (up to age 18) was raised by a single parent.

Description: Assists a student in an elementary education program during the final internship year. Supported by a pledge from Gary L. Heichel in memory of his wife Laura, the scholarship is intended to recognize a student who brings to the profession a love of teaching and high quality academic achievement.

Criteria for selection: Preference will be given to a student making good progress toward degree/licensure requirements, scholastic achievement, outstanding character, and professional commitment to elementary education. Must have a 3.0 overall GPA.

Description: This scholarship is for Virginia Tech undergraduate students who are planning to be teachers, especially in the Virginia critical teaching shortage areas, and who are in options within their majors that are leading to this goal.

Criteria for selection:

Priority will be given to those who, for two years preceding their acceptance, have resided in Franklin, Patrick, or Henry County, Virginia, with priority given to residents of those counties in the order listed. Applicants must plan to apply for the master’s program in the Virginia Tech School of Education when they are nearing completion of their bachelor’s degrees.  In addition, priority will be given to students preparing to become teachers in shortage programs offered at Virginia Tech (Elementary, Career and Technical, Mathematics, Counseling, English).  If no student who applies is from one or more of these counties or shortage areas, the award will be based on financial need and recipient(s) must be a resident of the State of Virginia.

Description: This scholarship was established by Dr. Robert S. Whiton, PhD, in honor of his late father, S. G. Whiton, Jr, who was a dedicated high school Chemistry and Physics teacher. It was established to encourage new students to become high school STEM educators.

Criteria for selection: Applicants must meet the following guidelines: 1) a graduate student who received an undergraduate degree in a STEM discipline and who is actively pursuing a graduate degree within the School of Education and an endorsement to become a high school science teacher 2) academic merit 3) first preference will be given to candidates whose undergraduate  degree is in Chemistry or Physics with second preference given to a candidate with an undergraduate degree in Biology, Math or another STEM discipline.

Robert C. Noyce Scholarship Program
The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program has been developed to increase the number and quality of new secondary school mathematics teachers. Please visit Mathematics Education for eligibility criteria and application information.

The Mary Karen Read Memorial Scholarship
The Mary Karen Read Memorial Scholarship was established to honor the memory of Mary Karen Read, an Interdisciplinary Studies major whose life was lost in Norris Hall on the Virginia Tech campus on April 16, 2007.

Deeply faithful in every aspect of her life, Mary's great happiness came from helping others, especially children, who were drawn to her gentle spirit and bright, welcoming smile. Mary's optimism, radiance, and generosity are celebrated through the awarding of this scholarship to individuals who share Mary's dream of one day teaching elementary school and positively influencing the lives of young children.

Each year, between $1,000 and $3,000 will be awarded to one or more individuals pursuing a degree within the College of Liberal Arts and Human Sciences with the intention of pursuing graduate study and/or a career in Early Childhood or Elementary Education.

Description: Intended to encourage outstanding students to consider a career in teaching. Supported by a pledge made by former Tech President, Dr. T. Marshall Hahn, in memory of his late son, William M. Hahn. The scholarship is awarded on a competitive basis to a student at Tech who is seeking teacher licensure.

Criteria for selection:

The student must be a first year graduate student in the Teacher Education Program. The recipient will be chosen on the basis of talent and ability, character and financial need. Must have a 3.0 overall GPA.

Description: The Graduate Residential Fellow is a live-in position with a primary responsibility of assisting the AFP with their academic and intellectual goals, offering mentorship to students, and facilitating the creation of a strong sense of community within the Residential College.

The Residential College at West Ambler Johnston (RC@WAJ) is a community of 850 students ranging from first-year to graduate students from all academic disciplines. Under the direction of the live-in Faculty Principal, the RC@WAJ consists of four residential "houses" of approximately 200 students. Each house is led by a live-out Associate Faculty Principal (AFP) and a live-in Graduate Residential Fellow.

The Graduate Fellows work closely with the student house council, resident advisors, the Faculty Principal, student affairs staff, and others to ensure that the goals and aspirations of the residential college are fulfilled (see https://llc.vt.edu/waj.html for more).

Remuneration: Graduate Residential Fellows receive a single room (with all utilities) in the Residential College, a major on-campus meal plan, and are appointed for a 1-year term, but are eligible for re-appointment for another 1-year term, based on performance. Ideally, a GRF serves in the position for 2 consecutive years. Note that this is a supplemental position and GRFs are able to hold a concurrent GA-ship or GTA-ship. The duties at the Res College are compatible with holding an additional fellowship.
