Ashley Shew, an assistant professor in the Department of Science and Technology in Society, received a 2017 Certificate of Teaching Excellence from the College for Liberal Arts and Human Sciences.

Shew’s students in several areas of focus — including the philosophy of technology, technology and disability, and bioethics — noted her ability to create a trusting, welcoming classroom, in which students are encouraged to think boldly.

Thinking boldly herself, Shew recently explored space through Spaces for the Future: A Companion to Philosophy of Technology, a forthcoming book she co-edited with Joseph Pitt, a professor in the Department of Philosophy. She has written another forthcoming book, Animal Constructions and Technological Knowledge.

Shew’s research centers on technologies for walking and standing, techno-optimism, techno-ableism, and the lived experience of disability.
