Happy Halloween! We promise there's nothing spooky to follow, just another edition of the Communication Corner.

Message from the Director

It is a pleasure to reconnect and share some exciting updates. With October nearly in the rearview mirror, our fall semester is well underway. Our dedicated students, faculty and staff have engaged in a number of activities — from career fairs to homecoming festivities and all the learning in between.

Within this newsletter, you will discover a selection of stories, visual snapshots and sounds from our School of Communication family. These narratives showcase the strength of our community and the legacy that you, our alumni, have influenced. We remain deeply appreciative of your support and connection to your alma mater. Wishing you a Happy Halloween and autumn season filled with exciting adventures.

MJ Fair
We hosted our annual Multimedia Journalism Career and Internship Fair. It was the sixth year in a row providing an amazing networking event to connect our students with media professionals — including a number of which were alumni.

Homecoming Tailgate
President Sands and some furry friends from Cook Counseling put on the headset and gave our play-by-play broadcasting experience a shot at the 2023 Homecoming Tailgate. It’s not as easy as Bill Roth and our students make it look.

ICON 2023

Six of our public relations majors attended PRSA ICON 2023 in Nashville to engage with industry leaders and gain valuable insights into the world of PR.

Kenny Brooks

Kenny Brooks, Virginia Tech’s women’s basketball coach, joined our Sports Journalism course where he reminded our sports media and analytics students to do their homework before an interview.

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT

Brady Hess

Brady Hess exemplifies the number of places a degree from the School of Communication can take you. A 2018 multimedia journalism graduate, Hess now serves as Assistant Attorney General in the Criminal Appeals Section of Virginia’s Office of the Attorney General.

“Keep an open mindset. I never thought when I was at Virginia Tech that this would be the career path I chose,” Hess said. “I am passionate about serving the Commonwealth and its citizens and I feel that I accomplish that in my current role.”
