Student Organizations

The Virginia Tech School of Communication hosts a chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America as well as the Society of Professional Journalism.

The Virginia Tech Chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America enhances what communication students learn in the classroom. Through PRSSA, students get hands-on public relations experience, find internship and job leads, and network with practitioners locally and across the nation. The Virginia Tech chapter has a student-run public relations agency, Ut Prosim PR. It does pro-bono public relations work for campus organizations. Check out our Weebly or connect with us on Facebook.

The Virginia Tech Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists educates its members of the different aspects and areas of journalism and the field of communication.  Professional journalists and other communicators often serve as guest speakers, offering networking opportunities, helping students improve their resumes, and giving career advice. Check us out on Facebook.

The Public Relations Society

The Public Relations Society

Society for Consumer Interest and Professional Development (SCIPD)
PRSSA is a student pre-professional organization affiliated with the Public Relations Society of America. That’s the nation’s largest public relations professional organization. The Virginia Tech chapter, chartered in 1985, is affiliated with the Blue Ridge Chapter of PRSA in Roanoke. Students can build their portfolios doing real-world public relations work. The chapter shares industry information through regular meetings, a listserv, blog postings, a newsletter, and PRSA publications. Each spring the chapter sponsors Communication Connections, a professional development and networking event on campus. In addition, PRSSA members can participate in meetings and professional development events sponsored by the Blue Ridge Chapter of PRSA. Virginia Tech representatives attend national PRSSA meetings throughout the year.

Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society
Lambda Pi Eta (LPH) is the National Communication Association’s official honor society at four-year colleges and universities. As an accredited member of the Association of College Honor Societies (ACHS), Lambda Pi Eta has active chapters at four-year colleges and universities worldwide. LPH represents what Aristotle described in The Rhetoric as three ingredients of persuasion: logos (Lambda), meaning logic; pathos (Pi), relating to emotion; and ethos (Eta), defined as character credibility and ethics. Lambda Pi Eta recognizes, fosters, and rewards outstanding scholastic achievement while stimulating interest in the communication discipline. The Virginia Tech chapter of LPH serves the community by volunteering at the Blacksburg Public library. Members provide English and college essay tutoring.
