About Our Program

Position yourself at the forefront of global affairs with Virginia Tech’s Graduate Certificate in Europe and Transatlantic Relations. This interdisciplinary program is designed for graduate students and professionals seeking to deepen their understanding of Europe’s political, economic, and cultural dynamics and its evolving relationship with the United States.

Whether you’re pursuing a career in international policy, global business, diplomacy, or academia, this certificate equips you with the analytical tools and regional expertise needed to navigate today’s complex transatlantic landscape. Through coursework in political science, international studies, and European history, you’ll gain valuable insights into transatlantic cooperation, security issues, EU governance, and more.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

The certificate requires successful completion of a total of twelve credit hours, of which 9 credits are required courses and 3 are elective. Students need to receive a grade of B or better in each course to receive the certificate. Students will not be allowed to retake a course for a better grade if they receive below a B. All courses are for 3 credit hours. All students must complete:

Core Courses 

  • PSCI 5704: Transatlantic Relations
  • PSCI 5714: European Union

Elective Courses

Students must select 6 credits from the following list of courses.

  • PSCI 5414: Industrial Democracies (3 credits)
  • PSCI 5424: Communist and Post-communist Systems (3 credits)
  • PSCI 5724: European Political Economy (3 credits)
  • PSCI 5734: European Politics & Society (3 credits)
  • PSCI 5744: European Security (3 credits)
  • PSCI 6154: Topics in European Politics (3 credits)
  • PSCI 6164: Topics in Transatlantic Relations (3 credits)
  • PSCI 6174: Topics in EU Policies (3 credits)
  • PSCI 6184: Topics in European Security (3 credits)
