Prospective Midshipmen

Midshipmen learning Fire Drill Safety

What is Naval ROTC?

The Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) is designed to educate and train qualified young men and women for service as commissioned officers in the unrestricted line Naval Reserve or Marine Corps Reserve. Unrestricted line officers serve in one of the Navy or Marine Corps warfare specialties: Surface Warfare, Naval Aviation, Submarines, Special Warfare, Combat Arms, Communications or Logistics. NROTC is the largest single source of Navy and Marine Corps Officers, filling a vital need in preparing mature young men and women for leadership and management positions in an increasingly technical Navy and Marine Corps. For more information please visit:

Why choose Naval ROTC at Virginia Tech?

Virginia Tech is 1 of the 6 Senior Military Colleges which means to be a Midshipman in the NROTC you must also be enrolled in the Corps of Cadets. Here you will have a chance to learn military discipline while also enjoying some of the freedoms of a civilian lifestyle. To learn more information about the Corps of Cadets please visit:

What is the difference between On Scholarship Midshipmen and College Program Midshipmen?

On Scholarship Midshipmen simply means you have earned a scholarship and are on the path to commissioning while College Program status means you are able to participate in all NROTC activities and requirements but must earn a scholarship or advanced standing in order to get onto the path of commissioning in ROTC. To learn more information about the different scholarships offered please visit our Scholarships page.

Additional benefits of joining

If on the path to commissioning, you can expect to have a job here at the NROTC Unit as soon as you graduate until you get sent to your next duty assignment and will enjoy full pay as a newly commissioned Ensign.
