Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Minor

What is a Minor in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies?

Gender matters in powerful ways, whether in health, science, technology, law, or politics.

Note: The minor is available to students who started before Summer 2024. See Women's and Gender Studies for students entering in or after Summer 2024.

Curriculum

What You'll Study

Our classes analyze debates about gender and sexuality. You will be examining structural and interpersonal dimensions of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality and disability over a range of topics including health, religion, media, global politics, and science.

Many students pursue internships with organizations, like the Women's Resource Center in nearby Radford, and we encourage students to conduct undergraduate research or design their own independent study courses with faculty.

Students' substantive knowledge of gender and other forms of inequality strengthens their skills, preparing them for a range of jobs which involve improving the quality of life from community organizing to advocating for women's international human rights. Students with a women's and gender studies minor go on to graduate study in such disciplines as education, history, political science, sociology, communication, business, and law, as well as interdisciplinary fields such as women's studies.
