Flag of the European Union: With the support of the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union
CEUTTSS is a Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence funded by the European Union

Program Overview:

For over 70 years both sides of the US-EU transatlantic relationship have supported liberal democracy. Essential to the continuation of western liberal values is the continued belief in, and education of, the importance of individual liberties, human rights and the rule of law in an elected democratic system. Essential to that is the role of education systems and schools who teach and reinforce those values.

Best placed to provide such education are the 11 US universities specifically charged to provide outreach to the community and K12 schools by the European Union – the Jean Monnet Centers of Excellence. Focusing on teachers and grass roots initiatives to adapt materials for individual classrooms is one of the most effective and efficient use of the resources of Jean Monnet centers high school programs.

The sad reality is that we live in a world today where more high school students are not educated in a democratic society than are, a division highlighted in sharp focus by Russia’s renewed invasion of Ukraine in 2022. This should be impetus enough for all those who care about preserving liberal democracy to renew their commitment to teaching it. The teaching of the EU in US high schools has never been more important than now.

It is the goal of CEUTTSS Outreach and K-12 Education programs to dedicate ourselves to that mission.
