Laura brings a diverse background in student support to her role as an Academic Advisor in Virginia Tech’s School of Communication. Her experience spans academic advising, student success, admissions, and teaching, with a passion for helping students navigate college, find their path, and make the most of their experience. Prior to joining Virginia Tech, Laura worked at Southern Virginia University and Mary Baldwin University and served as an adjunct faculty member teaching student success and first-year experience courses. She holds a B.A. in Psychology from Southern Virginia University and an M.S. in Higher Education from Mary Baldwin University.
Advising Approach
Laura believes some of the best advising happens when students feel like they have someone in their corner. She enjoys getting to know students as individuals, meeting them where they are, and helping them work through both the exciting and challenging parts of college. Her approach focuses on building genuine relationships while giving students the confidence and tools to make decisions, advocate for themselves, and take ownership of their experience. For Laura, one of the best parts of advising is walking alongside students throughout their college journey and watching them grow into themselves along the way.
Outside of Work
Outside of work, Laura loves playing tennis, taking trips to Busch Gardens, and hosting friends for dinners and holidays. Most of all, she loves spending time with her husband and best friend, who works in sports broadcasting and is currently working toward becoming a commercial pilot (despite Laura being much more comfortable with both feet firmly on the ground). They also share life with their very large Newfoundland dog, Frank, who has never met a stranger and is always happy to make a new friend.
