Community Response to Crisis
The Hub for Community Response to Crisis advances interdisciplinary, research-driven approaches to understanding and addressing vulnerability, hazards, disasters, and resilience. Drawing on fields such as sociology, engineering, geography, public policy, and environmental science, the Hub examines how risks are shaped not only by physical hazards but also by social, economic, and political conditions.
Through collaborative research and partnerships, the Hub works to identify structural vulnerabilities, evaluate the impacts of technological solutions, and develop equitable, sustainable resilience strategies. By bridging science, policy, and practice, it supports proactive efforts that strengthen communities’ capacity to prepare for, respond to, and recover from crises.
Extreme Event is a dynamic, creative training tool that enables participants to engage in realistic disaster planning scenarios designed to enhance decision‑making, creative problem solving, and effective teamwork under pressure. It is fun, quick, and useful for all levels of disaster planning experience, from seasoned emergency management personnel to people newly acquainted to the field. Participants take on different roles as teams develop effective responses to various disaster scenarios.
Extreme Event is widely recognized as a valuable tool for fostering communication, building strong relationships, leadership, and resilience-oriented thinking. It also supports community engagement efforts, campus safety and resilience programs, and outreach initiatives connecting emergency managers with the public.
