What is Public Interest Technology?

“At its heart, public interest technology means putting people at the center of the policymaking process — not just by designing programs with constituents’ needs in mind, but by engaging directly with constituents throughout the policy design and implementation process.” - New America PIT

Virginia Tech is part of the Public Interest Technology University Network (PIT-UN). Since, 2020, Virginia Tech has been engaged in furthering research into technology that centers public interests and the overall public good in areas such as justice, dignity, inclusivity, and autonomy.

Public Interest Technology (PIT) programs create spaces where constituents and policymakers come together to examine a wide range of technologies across all sectors, designing, implementing, and continuously improving upon problem-solving solutions that integrate real-time data and metrics. The involvement with, impact on , and implementation of technology in our communities is at the forefront of what drives Public Interest Technology.
