Our Science Education Program
Virginia Tech now offers a Distance Learning Program in which candidates earn a Masters of Arts in Education. The program is designed for practicing and provisionally licensed teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics grades 6-12. Using innovative technology to support a distance learning format, the program offers online coursework which includes educational foundations, science teaching pedagogy, special education, instructional technology, content area reading, and Integrated Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Education (STEM). Students may also pursue a twelve credit Integrative STEM Education certificate through their coursework within the program.

The Virginia Tech Science Education Program is designed to prepare science educators for teaching science through inquiry processes where students apply their knowledge in real world contexts. Teachers also learn how to facilitate the development of learning environments that motivate and inspire students from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Our science education program is dedicated to preparing scientifically and technologically literate students who can make positive contributions in the world.
What You’ll Study
The MAED Distance Delivery program is a 30-hour professional development program for practicing science teachers (licensed or provisionally licensed). Normally, students enroll in one 3-hour course per semester during full time employment and up to 12 hours in the summer. Students should submit a MAED Degree - Proposed Plan of Study after completing 12 hours of graduate credit. Below is a list of suggested 3-hour on-line courses that are currently available for each category in the MAED plan of study. A student’s advisor and MAED committee must approve all coursework in the Plan of Study.

Career and Professional Development
Science Education Program is designed to prepare science educators for teaching science. This program is designed for practicing and provisionally licensed teachers of Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, or Physics grades 6-12. Prospective students that have not yet acquired employment may begin taking courses under Commonwealth status and formally apply to the program once employment is obtained.
An atmosphere of peer support and a collaborative learning community is created through the use of video conferencing and additional electronic media. Coursework is designed to promote critical reflection of practice and effective use of science education pedagogy in alignment with NSTA Standards for Science Teacher Preparation.
