Mary Denson Moore's teaching and research interests have evolved out of a focus on intellectual development theory, particularly the work of Marcia Baxter Magolda, and how pedagogy can be used to transform lives. As a composition specialist, Moore focuses on communication, written, spoken, and visual, that develops students’ rhetorical awareness and critical thinking skills. By leading students to place themselves within a narrative framework, Moore encourage students to understand the relationships between knowledge, power, and language. Intellectual development theory is also at the center of Moore's work on Literature and the Environment. How do we educate a citizenry to understand our place in the natural work and the ways in which we are affecting it? Moore's particular interest involves sustainability and what the humanities brings to its discussion.
