Brief Bio

Carol A. Mullen, PhD, an award-winning researcher and mentor and Fulbright Scholar alumnus, is Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Virginia Tech and former editor of the Mentoring & Tutoring journal (Routledge). She has published 28 academic books and over 240 book chapters and articles in high-impact journals. Areas of research interest are educational leadership and mentoring, social justice and equity, policy studies, curriculum and instruction, creativity, and international education.

Extended Bio

Carol A. Mullen, PhD, an award-winning researcher and mentor and Fulbright Scholar alumnus, is Professor of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Virginia Tech and former editor of the Mentoring & Tutoring journal (Routledge). She served as a higher education administrator at two research universities.

She has published 28 academic books and over 240 book chapters and articles in high-impact journals. Areas of research interest are educational leadership and mentoring, social justice and equity, policy studies, curriculum and instruction, creativity, and international education.

Currently, she is President of the Society of Professors of Education and President-Elect of the University Council for Educational Administration (UCEA), and past president of the International Council of Professors of Educational Leadership.

She is editor of the Handbook of Social Justice Interventions in Education (2021), coeditor of The Risky Business of Education Policy (2021, Routledge), author of Revealing Creativity (2020), and Canadian Indigenous Literature and Art (2020).

Among the many accolades received, she was honored with Virginia Tech's 2021 Alumni Award for Excellence in International Research and 2019 Alumni Award for Research Excellence, the 2017 Living Legend Award from the ICPEL, the 2016 Jay D. Scribner Mentoring Award from UCEA, and the 2020 Excellence (OISE Leaders & Legends) Award from the University of Toronto, among others.

She teaches graduate courses in governance and policy, qualitative research, literature review, and more, and is an active doctoral supervisor who has graduated many advisees.
