Political Science Newsletter
Dear Colleagues, Students, and Friends of the Department,
I am honored to write to you as the new Chair of the Department of Political Science and to introduce the inaugural issue of our departmental newsletter.
Our department stands as one of the pillars of the college, accounting for about 25% of total student enrollments. This remarkable figure reflects not only the relevance of political science in today's world but also our reputation for excellence in both teaching and research in diverse streams of the discipline. Our faculty draw upon diverse methodologies and schools of thought to illuminate national and international politics, power and inequality, peace and conflict, ecological issues, and critical political thought, just to exemplify a few. At the same time, we bring this cutting-edge research into the classroom, providing students with an education that is both intellectually rigorous and deeply engaged with contemporary challenges.
The professional success of our alumni stands as perhaps the most compelling testament to our department's impact. Our graduates have gone on to distinguished careers in government, law, international organizations, advocacy, academia, and the private sector. They serve as policy advisors, elected officials, diplomats, attorneys, journalists, and thought leaders whose work shapes public discourse and decision-making at local, national, and global levels. Their achievements reflect the quality of education and mentorship they received here and inspire our current students.
This newsletter will serve as a vital platform for celebrating these achievements and strengthening our community. Through these pages, we will showcase the achievements of our faculty and undergraduate and graduate students, highlight the accomplishments of our programs and alumni, and keep you informed about departmental events and opportunities for engagement.
I invite you to contribute to this newsletter with your news and ideas. This publication belongs to our entire community, and I look forward to featuring the voices and accomplishments that make our department exceptional.
Thank you for your continued commitment to the Department of Political Science.
Laura Zanotti, Ph.D.
