Beyond the Classroom
Experiential Learning
Students in classical studies can join organizations that celebrate ancient cultures and build community. The department’s Classics Club brings students together for social events, film nights, and activities connected to Greek and Roman history and mythology. You’ll meet others who share an interest in the ancient world and have opportunities to participate in chapter events, cultural celebrations, and outreach activities with local schools and statewide classical associations.
Turn your interests into impact. Work one‑on‑one with a faculty mentor to design a project you care about, then present at conferences and publish in peer‑reviewed venues like Philologia. You’ll build standout experience for grad school and careers while sharpening your writing, analysis, and problem‑solving skills.
Step into the ancient world as you explore Riva San Vitale, Switzerland, tracing Roman history through the towns and landscapes they once influenced. Then continue on to Rome, where you’ll see iconic sites like the Colosseum, the Pantheon, and Piazza Navona up close. You may even take part in archaeological fieldwork for real hands‑on experience. Let the sights and sounds of the Mediterranean be your classroom as you earn credits toward your classical studies major.
With faculty drawn from diverse departments, we celebrate unique perspectives on classical studies. Their research topics include ancient magic, archaeology and art history, historiography, poetry, and modern engagement with ancient cultures.
We share a deep commitment to undergraduate teaching, and our faculty have received many teaching and advising awards.
