Matthew McDonough is an Advanced Instructor of History at Virginia Tech. Although he grew up in Los Angeles, he has spent much of his teaching career in the American South. He earned his Ph.D. in American military history from Kansas State University. Prior to his arrival at Virginia Tech, he was an Assistant Professor of Military and Security Studies at Air Command and Staff College for the Department of the Air Force and a Senior Lecturer of history at Coastal Carolina University. He was also a visiting professor at the United States Military Academy at West Point and the Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences in Remagen, Germany. His scholarship focuses on teaching pedagogy, wargaming, and simulations, as well as 19th century expansionism.

Dr. McDonough’s teaching interests include 19th and 20th century military history, leadership, strategy, military theory and ethics. He has led numerous staff rides to historical battlefields including Gettysburg, Antietam, Saratoga, and the Normandy landing beaches in France. In his spare time he is an avid wargamer, theme park enthusiast, and lover of spicy cuisine.
