2016 Steger Poetry Prize winners to be announced
Nikki Giovanni, world-renowned poet and University Distinguished Professor of English at Virginia Tech, will announce the winners of the 2016 Steger Poetry Prize on April 19 at 5 pm in the Holtzman Alumni Center. A reception will follow the ceremony.
Now in its 11th year, the annual poetry celebration for undergraduates is held every April, which is National Poetry Month.
“We are so proud of The Steger because we believe the arts are as much a necessary part of education as academics and athletics,” Giovanni told the Daily Press, in Newport News, Virginia.
The prizes were established in 2005 and funded by Charles W. Steger, Virginia Tech’s president at the time. Steger, now president emeritus, participates in the event every year.
This year’s competition garnered more than a hundred entries. The top 10 poems will be read at the event.
The competition is administered by Giovanni; directed by Aileen Murphy, senior instructor in the Department of English; and judged by a committee of faculty members. For more information, email Murphy or call her at 540-231-4747.
